A HEIR OF BARTÓK – GYÖRGY SÁNDOR

Juan José Chuquisengo meets renowned Hungarian pianist legend GYÖRGY SÁNDOR in his flat, Central Park South. Sándor has a lot to tell about his eventful life as a concert pianist and teacher, having studied before his emigration in Budapest with Zoltán Kodály (composition) and others. The most influential relationship in his life as a musician has been with Béla Bartók whom he described as a stunning pianist and marvellous musician besides the fact that Bartók was one of the century's most important composers.

Sándor was the soloist in the world première of Bartókís third piano concerto and later recorded all the Bartók concertos, being a true heir of Bartókian tradition. For Juan José it was of special importance that Mr. Sándor made an emphasis on the fact that Bartók always stayed a true, honest and original musician also when he employed abstract theoretical means in his compositions. Sándor had a lot to explain about musical fundaments relating all the sounding phenomenons to the basics of tonality which is the principle behind any perceptible form. Apart from those undoubtable facts he wonderfully excelled in Spanish knowledge ó a thing Juan José obviously enjoyed.
